Paris grocery shopping, as a way to see the city

A supermarket is where a city keeps its everyday self. In Paris that means a cheese case at the back of an ordinary shop, a traiteur counter selling what the neighborhood will eat tonight, a corner alimentation open long after the restaurants have stopped seating, and a covered market that empties by early afternoon. These are the shops Parisians actually use, and an hour spent in them tells you more about how the city eats than a menu translated into four languages.

This is a guide to those shops rather than to the restaurants around them. Every entry is researched and confidence-checked before it publishes: what the place is genuinely good for, when to arrive, and what is worth carrying out. Assembling a picnic, hunting a souvenir that is not a keyring, or finding a bottle at nine on a Sunday evening are all different errands, so start with the mood that matches yours, or read the city one neighborhood at a time.

What are you in the mood for?

Skip the alphabetical list. Pick a craving or a moment and we will point you at the shelves that answer it — from 3am snack runs to suitcase-worthy souvenirs.
