Lisbon's grocery shops, from traditional mercearias to new ones
Lisbon's streets hold both traditional mercearias and newer street supermarkets. Dozens of these supermarkets and mercearias have opened in the last decade, connected to major groups in Portugal. Some mercearias in Lisbon specialize in global products, offering items from Italy, Brazil, Korea, China, India, or Thailand for home cooking.
For local goods, one mercearia, Sto, focuses exclusively on Portuguese products. This shop aims to bring together various Portuguese items, each with its own story. Another shop on Rua do Poço dos Negros sells wines, craft beer, preserves, and bulk items. Conserveira de Lisboa, the city's oldest tinned fish shop, continues to sell quality conserved fish and preserves. At one shop, the owner is one of the few cheese affineurs in the Lisbon area and cures the Serra da Estrela cheeses sold there for four, eight and 12 months.
